AOC is being attacked because she’s a leftist and socialist.
The mistake with this narrative is the assumption that women are fundamentally on the same side so an attack on one woman is an attack on all women.
But women arent a monolith and not all women are on the same side. The aristocracy loves right wing women. And they tolerate moderate women. AOC wouldnt be under attack like this if she were a Biden or Pelosi style Democrat.
The attacks leveled against AOC are almost identical to the attacks against Bernie in 2016 and it’s because their policies target the power brokers.
This is about the economic levers of power and the fact that AOC is attacking the DC corporate power establishment.
If this were a gender thing then how come the Democratic establishment isnt jumping to her defense? How come Pelosi isnt stepping in to stand in solidarity? Where’s Hillary?
AOC isnt just “speaking up”, she is speaking go specific policy demands to address real and immediate material crises.
“They” dont attack women who speak up - when was the last time you saw attacks on any of the outspoken women who stand for the aristocracy? They attack people of all genders who challenge the aristocracy and AOC is one of the most clear headed critics of the status quo of anyone in politics.
Many in the aristocracy hate women and many attacking AOC would be all too happy to discourage women from speaking out or seeking power.
But to claim this is primarily about gender is to once again gloss over the substantive and vitally important political difference that divide many women. It’s to suggest that women who support a Green New Deal and universal healthcare are fundamentally on the same side as women who support Wall Street and work for defense contractors.
Women who are rising up the ranks at Raytheon or who are interning for Claire McCaskill arent watching the attacks on AOC and feeling discouraged - they’re watching the attacks on her and feeling empowered because the attacks are fundamentally about reinforcing the status quo right wing political and economic hegemony.
Anyone loyal to or invested in the status quo, of any gender, benefits from these attacks.
Any political analysis that sidelines policy and values is not a worthwhile analysis.
